Child Passenger Safety

The Massachusetts Child Passenger Safety Law

As of July 10, 2008 the law requires all children riding as passengers in motor vehicles to be in federally approved child passenger restraints that are properly fastened and secured until they are 8 years old OR over 57" tall.

The expanded law requires a booster seat/safety belt combination for children who have outgrown a child safety seat -- typically when they are above age 5 or 40lbs -- until they are 8 years old OR over 57" tall.  The Massachusetts safety belt law requires safety belt use by those 13 years of age and older.

eight out of ten child seats are NOT installed properly.  Have yours checked and installed correctly by a certified child passenger safety technician.  The A.P.D. child passenger safety program began in 2003 in which hundreds of child seat have been checked and installed.  Child passenger safety checkpoints are conducted frequently at the Amesbury Police Department.  The process of inspection and installation is free and takes about 30 minutes.  Parents also receive instructions in properly securing the child in the safety seat.

If you are interested in having your child's safety seat inspected, please call Officer David Clark at the police station (978-388-1212).  Checkpoint dates are available on his voicemail and posted on the town's MASTER CALENDAR.
