ADVISORY: Amesbury Riverwalk Bikeway
Path temporarily closing due to work from September 7 – September 9
AMESBURY – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will temporarily close the Riverwalk Bikeway on both sides of I-495 in Amesbury at 7 a.m., Wednesday, September 7, to allow construction crews to install portions of a new arch culvert that will carry the Bikeway beneath I-495. The affected section of the Bikeway is expected to reopen on Friday, September 9, no later than 3:30 p.m.
The path will be closed between the trail connector west of Oak Street and Rocky Hill Road. A signed detour route for bicyclists and pedestrians will be provided as shown on the attached map.
Bicyclists are urged to use the following detour:
- Westbound: turn right on Rocky Hill Road, turn left onto Elm Street, turn left onto Marston Street, turn right onto Oakland Street and then turn left onto the Riverwalk Connector.
- Eastbound: turn left on the Riverwalk Connector, turn right onto Oakland Street, turn left onto Marston Street, turn right onto Elm Street and turn right onto Rocky Hill Road.
Bicyclists and pedestrians are urged to use caution while travelling along the detour route.
The work is part of a MassDOT $7.7 million project to replace the bridges carrying I-495 over the Riverwalk Bikeway with a precast concrete arch culvert structure.
