It is recommended that if you need to speak with the Building Inspector, you make an appointment. In-office hours are unpredictable due to emergencies and/or scheduled appointments.

SUBMITTING PERMIT APPLICATIONS:
ALL PERMIT APPLICATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED IN FULL. THE APPLICATION MUST HAVE LISTED THE NAME OF YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY, ALONG WITH THE EXPIRATION DATE OF YOUR POLICY. A COPY OF YOUR INSURANCE AND/OR LICENSE(S) IS NOT REQUIRED. WE DO NOT KEEP CERTIFICATES ON FILE FOR REFERENCE, AND WE WILL NOT LOOK UP THIS INFORMATION ON PREVIOUSLY FILED PERMITS. INSURANCE INFORMATION CANNOT BE MAILED, FAXED OR EMAILED PRIOR TO, OR AFTER PERMIT SUBMITALL. THIS INFORMATION MUST ACCOMPANY THE PERMIT APPLICATION AS REFERENCED ABOVE. INCOMPLETE PERMIT APPLICATIONS ARE NOT HELD IN OUR OFFICE AND WILL BE RETURNED UNTIL COMPLETED APPLICATIONS ARE SUBMITTED.
PAYMENT BY CHECK ONLY PAYABLE TO: CITY OF AMESBURY
Permit applications can be dropped off and picked up through the Inpectional Services Administrative Assistant during normal hours of operation. The Administrative Assistant also schedules all appointments for the Building Inspector.
Building inspections are between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm daily (excluding Friday). Some appointments may be scheduled Thursday evening between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Please contact the Adm. Asst. to schedule your appointment.
A final inspection of your building permit will occur after electric / plumbing / gas has signed off, if applicable.
We do not give an exact time when we will be at each location. Either the contractor or the homeowner should be present between the hours of 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
Please be aware that building permits are removed from the site once completed, and become part of our permanent record for the property. If you require a copy for your records, please make sure there are two (2) copies on site. The Building Inspector will sign both copies and take one, leaving a copy for you if required.
SOLAR PERMIT INSTALLATION
A building permit AND electrical permit must be applied for (BOTH CAN BE OBTAINED BY CLICKING ON THE LINK ON THE LEFT OF THIS PAGE. Residential Building Permit Application, Electric Permit Application.). The cost for the building permit is $50.00 and the electrical permit is $80.00. Please mail in your applications with ONE CHECK in the amount of $130.00. Your building and electric permit will be emailed back to you. It will be your responsibility to have 2 building permits on-site along with a copy of the electric permit. When inspections are performed, including the final inspection, the permit is taken back to our office to keep with our permanent records. Solar companies requiring a copy of the permit must contact the homeowner. Please DO NOT call the office for copies or to see if inspections have been performed. All this information is on site when we meet you there, or can be obtained by contacting the homeowner.
