Amesbury Set to Host Opener of Williamsport Tournament
Amesbury, MA – June 26 – Amesbury’s Williamsport All-Star team is set to host its first game Wednesday in its drive for the annual Little League World Series. Amesbury will face off against Danvers American at Cashman Elementary School, with the first pitch slated for 5:30 p.m.
Each year, hundreds of thousands of children from around the globe set out on their magical summer journey they hope will lead to Lamade Stadium in Williamsport, PA. The Little League World Series, which takes place in August, is televised worldwide on ESPN.
This year's Amesbury squad has been working long and hard to ensure their journey will be one for the ages. Since the team was selected in early June, the team has practiced throughout the month, working on all aspects of their game as a team and as individuals.
"We want to be the throwback team that nobody wants to play," noted head coach Craig Genualdo. "We want to be the gritty bunch that never gives up and will never give you an inch. There are a lot of teams with a tremendous amount of talent but they are not going to be getting anything from us. We will battle you every pitch for the entire game. We talk a lot about 'bringing the lunch pail,' and putting in the work as a group to get where we want to go. The players have raised their expectations and, as a result, their games. They want this and are working hard for it."
Genualdo said he has "some phenomenal baseball coaches" assisting him this summer in Derek Scialdone and Pete Arsenault. Both were assistants on Amesbury's entry to Williamsport tournament last summer. Genualdo also noted several regular season coaches have jumped on board to help with practices, including Sean Hawrylciw, Derek Kimball, Mike Buetow and Leigh Noyes.
The squad has a strong core of players that have meshed together as a unit to form the lineup. Four players return from last year's Williampsort team: Trevor Kimball (P-OF-1B), Will Arsenault (C-SS), Drew Scialdone (CF, C, 1B) and Zach Hawrylciw (SS-P).
The infield is rounded out by a strong nucleus of players including Aiden Donovan manning the hot corner and Tyler Bartniski at second base. Bobby Porter anchors first base and will also pitch. Outfielders include Reece Jezowski, Aiden Fortier (also a utility infielder), Drew Genualdo, Hunter Belisle, who will also provide pitching depth, Shain Parisella and Kyle Palen.
Amesbury, which is part of Massachusetts District 15, begins pool play Wednesday and also plays Thursday in Danvers at 5:30 p.m. Pool play games are rounded out with contests against Boxford/Topsfield and Middleton. The top two teams from the pool will advance to the District 15 Final Four beginning Jul. 7.
